Spelling Go Fish

Grade Level: Grade 3

Description: Spelling can be very difficult to learn for some students. I have provided a new and improved game to help students with spelling. It is a game they are already familiar so it will not be hard to catch on to. This lesson allows students to learn their spelling words for the week and enjoy it. The students play the game as enjoyment and end up learning their spelling words meanwhile without it being noticed.

Goal: The students will practice their spelling words in a fun and fashionable manner.

Objectives:

  • The student will demonstrate good sportsmanship during the spelling go fish game.
  • The student will practice their spelling words both verbally and written.

Background Information: You may need to make the first batch of cards with spelling words on them the first time. This will help giving instructions a lot easier when you are able to demonstrate with the cards directly in front of you.

I would demonstrate one sample round to the class with 2 other students. The next time you play this game the students can make the spelling cards, it will work as another practice method for spelling. One thing to note is this lesson is taught in fun so remind students that there is no competition, and rules need to be followed by everyone equally.

Concepts: Students will be able to:

  1. Increase their spelling test scores or recieve 100% on their spelling test.
  2. Realize the importance and significance of the game towards their education.

Materials:

3x5 cards with spelling words on them Grid with 300 hundred squares pencils Overhead Ex: Grid Overhead marker Deck of playing cards

Procedrue:

  1. Have each student pull a card from the deck.
  2. Place in groups according to their number of face card.
  3. Have a set of 20 cards with their spelling words, each word is in the set twice.
  4. Assign a job to each person in the group

    1-being a time keeper
    2-being a shuffler
    3-reporting to me when your game is completed properly.

  5. Explain the game spelling go fish
    • The shuffler deals only 4 cards to each person and the remaining cards go in the middle of the students.
    • Each student wants to get rid of all their cards
    • Ask one person in the group if they have the word ONCE, spell it loud, after repeating the word, if the individual the student asked does not have this card they need to go fish in the left over cards in the middle and try to pick a card that matches the work ONCE.
  6. *When the first person is out, the reporter will come to me and I will instruct them to trade jobs and begin a new game. This time instead of spelling the word aloud the need to use the word they are asking for in a sentence.
  7. *When completed they will find a partner for their seat work while other groups are finishing up.

Seat Work: A grid will be empty for the students to take turns writing in spelling words of the week. (It is similar to the game scrabble)

Assessment:

  1. I will walk around the class during the game and make sure good sportsmanship is taking place, and students are all participating.
  2. Ask students if they enjoyed practicing spelling with a game versus a worksheet and if they would like to do this again?
