Rhyming Your Spelling Words

Summary: Learning spelling words does not have to be all drill. In this activity the students will be rhyming and playing with their own names and then doing the same things for their spelling words.

Background Information: This lesson can be used with any spelling words. The students can use rhyming to remember their spelling words. They connect rules and spellings of words they already know to their new words.

Materials Needed:

• Tape recorder
• the song "What's Your Name?" from Disney's Silly Songs

Procedure:

1. Ask the students if they have ever been misunderstood.
2. Listen to the song from the tape.
3. Ask them to come up with rhymes for their own names.
4. Introduce from between 1 and 5 new spelling words.
5. Ask them to come with rhymes for the words.
6. Ask them if the spelling of their spelling words are similar to the rhyming words they came up with.
7. Let them practice writing their spelling words.

Assessment: The students will be able to correctly spell all their spelling words on their next spelling test.
