Interviewing of Historical Figures

attended the Columbia Education Center's Summer Workshop. CEC is a consortium of teacher
from 14 western states dedicated to improving the quality of education in the rural,
western, United States, and particularly the quality of math and science Education. CEC
uses Big Sky Telegraph as the hub of their telecommunications network that allows the
participating teachers to stay in contact with their trainers and peers that they have met
at the Workshops.

Grade Level/Subject: Appropriate for Grades 5-8
Overview: The students will gain knowledge of historical
figures using an interviewing technique.
Purpose: The students will develop research techniques,
writing, listening and speaking skills.
Objective(s): The students will:
- research a historical figure.
- take notes.
- formulate appropriate questions to gain knowledge of the historical person.
- work cooperatively in small groups.
- perform interview with partner with whole class as the audience.
- evaluate - peers and self.
- demonstrate good listening and speaking skills.
Resources/ Materials Needed:
resource books, pictures of character, student created microphone, costumes, computer
program ( Time Liner )
Activities:
- Research a historical figure with a partner.
- Take notes from resource books.
- Formulate and record the questions and suggested answers within the group.
- Practice the interview.
- Perform the interview with the whole class as an audience.
- Complete an evaluation form - self/peer.
- Accelerated group - Develop a time line of the person's life using the computer.
Tying It All Together:
1. Presentation of several of the interviews at the Patriotic Assembly in February.
2. Print and display time lines.
