Nutrition Game
Submitted by: Clair Searing
School or Affiliation: Christopher Columbus Middle School, Clifton, NJ
Subject Area: Health
Objectives:
- To learn to use the computer to search for data
- To learn about nutrition
Grade Level: 6
Materials:
- One computer
- Software: database, graphics
- Teacher-prepared data file templates and student worksheets
- Teacher-prepared class game
- Stop watch
Time Required: 1 class period
Activities and Procedures:
- Divide the class into two teams and ask questions about nutrition. The first team to
answer correctly gets to move its game piece (hamburger, pie slice, donut, or chicken
drumstick) ahead and to input the correct answer into the database.
- Have the teams answer random questions during each round on "Snackology,"
"The Grocery Maze," "Food Facts," and "Fitness."
- Allow thirty seconds for a team to respond. After each correct response, the team
advances and is given the option to answer a bonus question. The team chooses the
category, and if the question is missed, the team moves back one space.
- Occasionally a question is worth two moves, or a team gets a free move forward or even
backward.
Additional Ideas:
Computer-generated graphics and certificates can be created by the students or the
teacher and used with the game. Healthy snacks can be awarded.
