Salt Water Painting

Description:

Salt Water Painting is a lesson to go along with a Science unit on Weather. The students will paint with colored salt and water. In doing this they will see that the water will evaporate and the salt will not.

Goal:

The students will observe and understand the process of evaporation.

Objectives:

• The student will recognize liquids that evaporate.
• The student will describe the process of evaporation.

Background Information:

The lesson goes along with a Science unit. The water cycle that goes along with the elements of weather. How the sun warms the water in the oceans and lakes and the water evaporates into the air. The water vapor in the air condenses into clouds. The clouds become heavy with water and the rain falls back into the ocean and lakes.

Concepts: The students will be able to:

1. Relate the weather cycle to the evaporation of the water on their painting.
2. Give examples of what substances evaporate and what substances do not.

   Materials:

   Salt
   Paper
   Containers
   Water
   Paint Brushes
   Food Coloring
   Measuring Cups

   Procedure:

   1. Measure 1/4 cup of salt into a container. Add 1/4 cup warm water to the salt.
   2. Add several drops of food coloring to the mixture. Giving all groups different colors.
   3. Paint with the paint brushes a picture with the mixture. The students are allowed to paint what they like.
   4. Lay the paintings to dry overnight.
   5. The water will evaporate from the painting and the colored salt will stay on the paper.
   6. The students will examine their paintings the next day and see what happened.

   Assessment:

   The students will write a summary of what happened with their painting.
